Winthrop Harbor was incorporated in 1901.
Recreation
Residents have immediate access to the North Point Marina, recognized as the
Great Lakes' largest inland marina with over 1,500 slips. In addition to free
boat launching, North Point has two large sandy beaches and some of Lake Michigan's
finest shoreline fishing. Hiking trails connect North Point Marina with the
north unit of Illinois Beach State Park. Community facilities include a 38 acre
Village Park with a lighted ball field, volleyball and basketball courts and
a large indoor recreational and meeting facility. Bicycle and walking paths
are available throughout the community with more in the planning stage.
Schools
Elementary students in Winthrop Harbor attend schools in either Winthrop Harbor
District #1 or Beach Park District #3 with total enrollment of 860 and 1,919
respectively. High School students attend nearby Zion-Benton Township School
District #126 with a total enrollment of 2,061.
Housing
Winthrop Harbor offers many wooded homesites on ravines as well as traditional
lots. The 2000 median house value was $143,900 and the median rent cost was
$727. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)
Government Services
Fire protection is provided by a volunteer fire department that has 50 volunteers
and one station. The Winthrop Harbor Police Department has 10 full-time officers
and seven part-time officers.
Transportation
Winthrop Harbor is linked to other lakeshore communities by a Pace bus line
running along Sheridan Road, and the Metra Chicago & North Western/North
Line commuter railroad. Chicago and Milwaukee are accessible by Interstate 94.
