Port Barrington was incorporated in 1969. It straddles the boundary of Lake and McHenry Counties. The Village is bordered on the west by the Fox River with a series of manmade channels known as the "Nielsen Channels."

Recreation -- Residents enjoy snowmobiling, boating and fishing with a free launch located on Park Drive. The Fox River Forest Preserve lies within the village.
