Island Lake was incorporated in 1950.
Recreation -- Island Lake's 78-acre lake offers residents year-round recreation with fishing, swimming, boating and ice skating. The Fox River is another popular attraction for boating, water skiing and fishing. Recreational facilities and classes are also available through the village's Recreation Program. Several golf courses, Fox River Forest Preserve, Lakewood Forest Preserve and Moraine Hills State Park are within a short driving distance.
Schools -- Students in Island Lake attend both Wauconda Unit School District #118 and McHenry schools. District #118 has an enrollment of 3,547 students. There are parochial schools in Wauconda and Barrington.

Government Services -- Police protection is provided by the Island Lake Police Department's 17 sworn officers. The Wauconda Fire District with its two stations, one located in Island Lake, provides fire protection for the village.
