Grayslake was incorporated in 1895. Located in the center of the village is Gray's Lake, which is the village's primary recreational asset.
Recreation -- The Lake County Fairgrounds, a year-round facility located in Grayslake, is available to all county residents and organizations. Public recreational facilities include 28 park sites encompassing 246 acres, the Ester A. Peterson Family Aquatic Center, a nine hole golf course and a beach.
Schools -- Elementary students in Grayslake are served with five schools with total enrollment of 3,420 students as well as a private elementary school with 559 enrolled. High school students attend Grayslake Community High School District #127, which serves 1,800 students. Grayslake is also the home of the main campus of the College of Lake County, a community college offering transfer, career, adult, and continuing education courses and programs to over 14,000 students each semester.
Housing -- The lake, in the heart of Grayslake, is ringed by many attractive homes, some dating back to the founding of the Village in the mid-1800's. The 2000 median house value was $192,900 and the median rent cost was $820. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000) A growing number of small manufacturing firms are utilizing the abundance of industrial sites, supporting the Village tax base.
Government Services -- The Grayslake Fire Protection District has 23 full-time firefighters, 23 part-time firefighters and one station. Police protection is provided by 30 full-time sworn and 16 non-sworn members.
Transportation -- Metra's Milwaukee District/North Line commuter rail and the Wisconsin Central serve the village. Both routes provide access to Chicago. Service is provided by the Pace bus system to reach other surrounding communities.
