Fox Lake was incorporated in 1907. The village's growth and expansion programs include a new municipal water and sanitary sewage system, a recently constructed municipal building housing governmental services, and a library.

Recreation -- Fox Lake attracts boaters, anglers, hunters, and vacationers who enjoy the Chain O'Lakes resort area.

Schools -- Students in Fox Lake are served by four elementary school districts: Big Hollow District #38 with 543 students; Gavin District #37 with 1,101 students; Fox Lake District #114 with 908 students; and Antioch District #34 with 2,002 students. There are also 3 parochial elementary schools. The majority of high school students attend Grant Township High School District #124 with an enrollment of 990 students. A small number of the village's high school students attend Antioch Community High School District #117 with 1,801students.

Housing -- Housing opportunities feature both older cottage type homes and newer houses. The 2000 median house value was $137,600 and the median rent cost was $685. (U.S. Census Bureau, 2000)

Government Services -- The Fox Lake Police Department has 22 sworn officers. Fire protection is provided by the Fox Lake Fire Department, which has seven full-time firefighters, 72 volunteers and 4 stations.

Transportation -- The Metra Milwaukee District/North Line provides commuters rail service to Chicago. Bus service links the community with nearby villages, regional shopping malls, and the College of Lake County in Grayslake.
