Verify That You, Or Your Mortgage Company, Paid Your Cook County Real Estate Taxes
Here is information that you may find useful about Cook County property taxes. The Cook County Treasurer's Office recently announced the transition of property tax collections to Bank One. This gives the option of paying at Bank One, to all owners of all 1.7 million parcels of taxable real estate in Cook County. The change takes effect with the First Installment tax bills that will be mailed at the end of January and due Mar 1, 2005.
Your first opportunity
to appeal your property tax assessment would be when you recieve your new proposed
assessed valuation for the property. This value is reassessed every three years
by the Cook County Tax Assessor's office,
who then sends the property owner a reassessment notice. On that notice is a
date by which you can file for an appeal with the Assessor's Office through
their Taxpayer Assistance Office. If
you are not satisfied with the results of your appeal, you can contact the Assessor's
Taxpayer Advocate Department, which will conduct individualized re-reviews when
evidence indicates the possibility of error. If you still do not reach resolution
on your assessment, or if you missed the Assessor's appeal date, you can then
contact the Cook County Board of Review.
The Board has the authority to review the assessment and, upon finding that
an assessment is not correct, order the Assessor to increase or decrease any
assessment accordingly.
